Is DXF 2D or 3D?

DXF (Drawing Exchange Format) supports both 2D and 3D data. However, it is primarily used for 2D drawings because of its wide compatibility with CAD, CAM, CNC, and laser-cutting software.

This is the most common use of the DXF format. It can store:

  • Lines
  • Arcs
  • Circles
  • Polylines
  • Splines
  • Dimensions
  • Text
  • Layers
  • Hatching
  • Blocks

Applications:

  • Mechanical drawings
  • Architectural floor plans
  • CNC machining
  • Laser cutting
  • Waterjet cutting
  • Plasma cutting

DXF can also store 3D geometry, including:

  • 3D faces
  • 3D polylines
  • Meshes
  • Solids (limited support, depending on the software)

Applications:

  • Simple 3D models
  • Data exchange between CAD programs
  • Visualization

However, many CAD programs do not fully support advanced 3D information in DXF files. Complex features such as parametric design history, feature trees, materials, and assembly relationships are generally not preserved.

Use DXF for:

For complex 3D models, formats such as STEP (.stp) or Parasolid (.x_t) are generally preferred because they preserve geometry more accurately and are better supported across different CAD systems.

  • While 3D DXF is possible, it is not the preferred format for exchanging detailed 3D CAD models. STEP or IGES are usually better choices for that purpose.
