What is Engineering Drawing? Everything you need to know

What is Engineering Drawing?

The term Engineering drawing is a way of representing three-dimensional objects(such as cubes and pyramids) in a two-dimensional drawing. It provides all the necessary information about the object, such as its shape, size, material, and manufacturing process.

Hence Engineering drawing is a technical drawing conveying information about an object. Engineers and technicians use these technical drawings to visualize 3d objects.

Why is Engineering Drawing so important?

Imagine you are working as a design engineer in a well-known manufacturing company. On one fine day, an older man visits your company, handles you a cube (as shown in the image below), and requests you to manufacture it.

3d cube

What will you do? What are the lists of questions which goes through your mind?

What is its length?

What is its width?

What is its height?

How can I manufacture it?

What will be its tolerance value?

So after measuring the length, breadth, and height, you will note these values on a piece of paper and send it to the manufacturing unit.

In the above case, it is just a simple cube. Hence the drawing would be simple. But in the case of complicated mechanical parts such as crankshaft, connecting rod. dimensioning these parts will be challenging.

Hence to overcome these difficulties, Engineering drawing is used. So in the case of these complicated drawings, we use the front view, top view, and side view of the objects.

The following image shows the technical drawing of a connecting rod.

Hence engineering drawing is a technical way of representing the three dimensional objects in a two dimensional drawing.
