WHAT IS CHAIN DRIVE?
A chain drive is one of the mechanically operated system in which the power is transmitted from one Component to the another. The chain drives are used where the distance of power transfer between the two parts are less.
ADVANTAGES OF CHAIN MECHANISM
- It has major advantages over the belt and rope mechanism where the percentage of slip occurs, but in
chain mechanism, there will be no slip occurs. It does not mean that the chain drive transmit 100%
power.
- Due to some friction, the power loss occurs in the chain mechanism.
- Another major advantages of the chain mechanism is that it maintains the constant speed ratio and also
no slippage occurs.
- A chain is made up of number of links and are connected by the means of pin. These chains are also
used in the chain and sprocket mechanism.
- chain drive is used for transmission of power for lifting of heavy loads and also used to carry the material.
- The chain drive has low maintenance cost.
- The chain drive has greater efficiency up to 95% since slipping is negligible and hence there is no power loss due to slipping when compared to the belt drive.
- Chain drive can also able to withstand the abrasive conditions.
- Installation of a chain drive is very easy.
- Initial tension is not required in the chain drive.
- Chain drive requires lesser space and are more compact than the belt drive.
- The chain drive transfers higher power when compared to the belt drive.
- The speed ratio is constant in the chain drive.
DISADVANTAGES OF CHAIN DRIVES
- The major disadvantages of the chain drive are that it requires frequent lubrication due to friction.
- The chain drive also suffers vibration problem.
- applications of chain drive that’s chain drive is used for transmission of power it is also used where lifting loads to and also used to carry the material Check this video below to design chain mechanism in creo.
