What is a Construction line?
In SOLIDWORKS, construction lines are sketch entities used as references or guides to help define and constrain other sketch entities without becoming part of the actual geometry for the 3D model.
They are typically dashed lines that serve a supporting role in designing precise sketches.

In SOLIDWORKS, you can quickly create construction lines using these shortcuts and methods:
Shortcut Keys
- Toggle Construction Geometry: Select a line (or multiple lines) in a sketch and press Ctrl + Q to toggle it into a construction line.
2. Convert to Construction:Select the line(s), right-click, and choose “Construction Geometry” from the context menu.
3. Draw Construction Lines Directly:Press the L key to activate the Line tool.
Before drawing, check the “For construction” box in the Property Manager to create construction lines directly.
Custom Keyboard Shortcut
You can set your own shortcut for toggling construction geometry:
1. Go to Tools > Customize > Keyboard.
2. In the Search for field, type Construction Geometry.
3. Assign a preferred key combination to the command.
Pro Tips:
Use Centerlines for symmetry or reference by choosing Centerline instead of the standard line in the Line tool menu.
Enable Dynamic Mirror to create symmetric construction lines automatically while sketching (found in Tools > Sketch Tools > Dynamic Mirror). These shortcuts save time and make sketching more efficient.
Applications of Construction lines:
- Alignment and Centering: To position geometry symmetrically or along an axis.
- Guiding Features: As references for dimensions or creating patterns.
- Constraints: To define relationships between different parts of a sketch.
- Symmetry: Used as a mirror line for symmetrical designs.
- By incorporating construction lines effectively, you can create more precise and easily modifiable sketches.
