In this article, we explain where the clutch is located helps you understand how it works with the engine and transmission.

📍 Location of the Engine Clutch in a Car
The clutch assembly is located between the engine and the gearbox (transmission) — inside the bell housing of the transmission.
Here’s a step-by-step look at its position:
🔧 Clutch Placement
- The flywheel is bolted to the rear end of the engine crankshaft.
- The clutch disc is mounted on the transmission input shaft and pressed against the flywheel.
- The pressure plate and release mechanism (bearing + fork) sit in the clutch housing (also called bell housing).
- The entire clutch system is enclosed to protect it from dust, dirt, and damage.
🚗 In a Typical Front-Engine, Front-Wheel Drive Car
- The engine and transmission are mounted side by side (transversely).
- The clutch is inside the transmission bell housing — usually near the front axle.
🚗 In a Rear-Wheel Drive Car
- The engine is longitudinally mounted.
- The clutch sits right behind the engine, before the transmission, under the transmission tunnel (the raised section in the center of the car floor).
🖼 Simple Layout
Engine → Flywheel → Clutch Assembly (disc + pressure plate) → Transmission Input Shaft
So physically, if you opened the hood and looked between the engine and gearbox, the clutch would be inside that connection point.
